IonQ invests in and partners with Heven AeroTech to develop quantum-enabled drones for national security
On 2025-11-24 IonQ announced an investment and strategic partnership with Heven AeroTech, a Virginia-based hydrogen-fuel-cell drone maker, to integrate IonQ's quantum computing, networking, sensing and security into autonomous aerial systems for national-security applications, including quantum-secured drone links, fleet-routing optimization, and quantum-sensor-based alternative positioning, navigation and timing. IonQ's Jordan Shapiro joins Heven's board. The investment amount was not disclosed. Disclosed via IonQ press.
A quantum-into-defense-platform partnership with a board seat and undisclosed investment extends IonQ's networking/sensing/security unit into an applied defense channel, but it is an early-stage development partnership without a contract value, placing it low in the band.
Embedding quantum sensing/PNT and secured comms into autonomous drones is a credible near-term defense use case for quantum sensing (less qubit-count-dependent than computing); conversion to funded programs of record is the proof point.
