IonQ announces intent to acquire quantum-sensing firm Vector Atomic
On 2025-09-17 IonQ announced a definitive all-stock agreement to acquire Vector Atomic, a quantum-sensor company specialising in positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) hardware including atomic clocks, gravimeters, and inertial sensors. IonQ cited Vector Atomic's $200M+ in government contracts, 76 employees, and 29 issued/pending patents, framing the deal as making IonQ the only company integrating quantum computing, networking, and sensing on one platform. The transaction (price undisclosed) later closed on 2025-10-07.
IonQ's expansion into quantum sensing via an all-stock acquisition of a defense-contracted PNT specialist is a meaningful strategic diversification, though the undisclosed consideration and signed-but-not-yet-closed status place it at the meaningful rather than major tier.
Adding field-validated PNT sensing extends IonQ's federal addressable market beyond computing and complements its same-day DOE quantum-in-space MOU and IonQ Federal buildout.
