IonQ announces intention to acquire Lightsynq Technologies to accelerate quantum networking and scaling
On 2025-05-08 IonQ announced an agreement to acquire Lightsynq Technologies Inc., a Boston-based quantum-memory and photonic-interconnect startup founded by former Harvard quantum-networking researchers and ex-AWS leads Mihir Bhaskar, Bart Machielse, and David Levonian. The all-stock transaction brings in a portfolio of more than 20 quantum-memory patents and patent applications and is positioned to accelerate IonQ's quantum-networking and quantum-computing roadmaps toward a stated path to millions of qubits. The deal subsequently closed 2025-05-30 (see related close event).
Acquiring a quantum-memory and photonic-interconnect team with a 20+-patent portfolio is a meaningful capability and IP consolidation for IonQ's networking roadmap, beyond an exploratory partnership.
Combined with the same-week Capella Space and earlier ID Quantique deals, the Lightsynq acquisition signals IonQ assembling a vertically integrated quantum-networking and secure-communications stack via all-stock M&A while its share price supports the currency.
