IonQ announces intention to acquire Capella Space to build a space-based quantum key distribution network
On 2025-05-08, alongside its Q1 results, IonQ announced an agreement to acquire Capella Space Corporation, a synthetic-aperture-radar satellite operator, to develop a space-to-space and space-to-ground satellite quantum-key-distribution (QKD) network. Financial terms were not disclosed; IonQ said the transaction was expected to close in the second half of 2025 (it subsequently closed 2025-07-15), with Capella to operate as a wholly owned subsidiary.
An acquisition giving IonQ in-orbit satellite infrastructure to pursue space-based QKD extends its secure-communications strategy into a new layer, though undisclosed terms and a deferred close cap the certainty.
Pairing Capella's SAR satellites with IonQ's quantum networking IP positions IonQ to compete for government and defense space-QKD programs, and reframes IonQ from a computing pure-play toward a broader quantum-communications infrastructure company.
