On 2025-02-26 IonQ announced a definitive agreement to acquire a controlling stake in ID Quantique, the Geneva-based quantum-networking and quantum-key-distribution firm, in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately CHF 140 million (~$155 million USD; up to ~5.2 million IonQ shares). Alongside the deal IonQ entered a strategic quantum partnership with SK Telecom, ID Quantique's largest shareholder and South Korea's largest wireless operator. IonQ stated the acquisition adds ID Quantique's quantum-networking and QKD product line plus a portfolio of nearly 300 granted and pending patents, raising IonQ's controlled patent count to nearly 900. The transaction was filed as an 8-K (Item 1.01) on 2025-02-27 and was expected to close in spring 2025. According to IonQ, closing later occurred on 2025-04-30 with aggregate consideration of 4,215,740 shares.
This is the largest M&A move by a public pure-play quantum company to date in this corpus window, materially expanding IonQ from ion-trap computing into quantum networking and QKD via an established commercial product line and a ~300-patent estate; the SK Telecom tie-in extends IonQ's commercial reach into the Asian telecom market.
