Telefonica Tech and IBM sign quantum-safe technology collaboration
IBM and Telefonica Tech announced on 2025-01-30 a collaboration agreement to develop and deliver quantum-safe security solutions. Per IBM's newsroom release, IBM will deploy its quantum-safe infrastructure (IBM Guardium Quantum Safe, including Quantum Safe Explorer and Remediator) at Telefonica Tech's Madrid headquarters, combining it with Telefonica Tech's managed cybersecurity services to protect enterprises and public administrations against future cryptographically relevant quantum computers using NIST post-quantum cryptography standards. The agreement contemplates a joint use-case office for communications encryption, algorithm migration, and critical-environment protection.
The deal pairs IBM's PQC tooling with a major European telco's cybersecurity channel, advancing commercial deployment of NIST PQC standards into enterprise and public-administration environments rather than remaining a standards-track exercise.
Telco-led PQC migration partnerships create a distribution path for quantum-safe cryptography across critical national infrastructure; IBM's pattern of pairing Guardium PQC tooling with regional integrators is a template for scaling PQC adoption ahead of harvest-now-decrypt-later risk.
